UNITED NATIONS (IDN) — The warnings came from the highest echelons of the United Nations, from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and President of the 193-member General Assembly Abdulla Shahid.

The message was clear: the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) desperately need help for their very survival, eight years ahead of their 2030 deadline for full implementation.

WHO Calls for Equitable and Global Access to Bacterial Medicines

GENEVA (IDN) — In the first-ever “analysis of bacterial vaccines in preclinical and clinical development: 2021”, the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for “equitable and global access to the vaccines that already exist, especially among populations that need them most” because of limited resources at their disposal.

This report is part of the WHO efforts to inform sustainable investment in research and development of new medicines, diagnostic tools, and other interventions to control AMR (antimicrobial resistance).

フィジー政府の無関心でレブカの世界遺産が危機に

緑に覆われ、起伏の激しいこのオバラウ島は、南北わずか13キロ、東西10キロであり、フィジー最大のビティレブ島の東海岸側に位置している。島内唯一の港町であるレブカは人口1500人で、フィジー唯一の世界遺産の地でもある。しかし、地域の名士たちは、もしフィジー政府が世界遺産としての価値に十分関心を払わないならば、レブカが遺産のリストから外される可能性もあると話す。

元教師でレブカ町議会の元議長でもあるスリアナ・サンディーズ氏は、レブカの文化遺産と文化観光の発展に十分な優先順位を与えていないと批判している。

SDG Roadmap is the Way Forward in the Face of Global Crises

NEW YORK (IDN) — The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022 of the United Nations says the climate crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic and an increased number of conflicts around the world have placed the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in jeopardy.

The report, released on July 7, highlights the severity and magnitude of the challenges, with these cascading and intersecting crises creating spin-off impacts on food and nutrition, health, education, the environment, and peace and security, and affecting all the SDGs, the blueprint for more resilient, peaceful and equal societies.

6月初めにスウェーデンで開催された国際会議「ストックホルム+50」で、国連のアントニオ・グテーレス事務総長が、干ばつや洪水、熱波、公害、多様性の喪失などが世界的にもたらしている壊滅的な影響を軽減するための資金提供を富裕国が怠っていることに対して強い不満を表明した。

資金不足は、貧困や飢餓を2030年までに根絶するとした国連の17項目の「持続可能な開発目標」(SDGs)の履行にも影を投げかけている。
