Top Economists Urge Solidarity to Avert Worsening of the COVID-19 Impacts

NEW YORK (IDN) — Eminent thought leaders in economic and social fields have called for fundamental change in the multilateral system in the spirit of international solidarity to combat the severe impacts of COVID-19. They comprise the United Nations High-level Advisory Board on Economic and Social Affairs, convened by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

In their two-day meeting middle of April, twenty Advisory Board members explored various approaches to confront the once-in-a-century crisis, with inequalities, climate change and lack of access to COVID vaccines topping the priority list.

World Bank-IMF Pledge Support for Pandemic Affected Countries

WASHINGTON (IDN) — While planning to rebuild economies after the COVID-19 pandemic, countries would do well to lay the foundation for a green, resilient, and inclusive future. This was the message of the World Bank-International Monetary Fund (IMF) virtual Spring Meetings from April 5 to 11, 2021. UN Forum Highlights New Initiatives to Tackle Inequalities Exacerbated by Pandemic

NEW YORK (IDN) — With many economies reeling as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and as inequalities continue to widen, world leaders discussed options to unlock concrete investments to support a sustainable and resilient recovery at the Forum on Financing for Development (FfD Forum) from April 12-15.

The four-day Forum, held under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), took place as many countries are facing increased financial debt and liquidity pressures because of the pandemic. The FfD Forum was held virtually, with selected in-person sessions.

長らく待ち望まれていたアフリカ大陸自由貿易圏(AfCFTA)が1月1日に発効した。規模的には世界で最大の自由貿易地帯となる予定であり、アフリカの貿易新時代が約束されている。

世界銀行によれば、アフリカ全体の自由貿易協定は、大きな改革と貿易促進措置が伴うならば、2035年までに圏内の総収入を4500億ドル増やし、3000万人を極度の貧困から救う可能性がある。自由貿易地帯は、完全に運用がなされるようになると、12億人規模の市場となり、GDPの合計は2.5兆ドルとなる。

新型コロナウィルス感染症のパンデミックは、世界の最も貧しい国々に極めて深刻な状況をもたらしている。60以上の国連機関および国際機関が発表した「持続可能な開発に向けた資金調達報告書2021」は、コロナ禍によって持続可能な開発目標(SDGs)の達成がさらに10年は遅れることになると警告している。パンデミックのために世界経済はこの90年で最悪の景気後退を経験しつつある。

このことは、最も社会的に弱い立場の人々に特に悪影響を与えている。推定1億1400万人が職を失い、約1億2000万人が極度の貧困に陥った。

Afrikanische Freihandelszone soll Millionen von Menschen aus der extremen Armut befreien und das Wachstum ankurbeln

BULAWAYO, Simbabwe (IDN) — Die lang erwartete Afrikanische Kontinentale Freihandelszone (AfCFTA) — die flächenmäßig größte Freihandelszone der Welt —, die am 1. Januar 2021 in Kraft trat, verspricht eine neue Ära für den afrikanischen Handel.

Ein afrikaweiter Freihandelspakt könnte das Einkommen der Region um 450 Milliarden Dollar steigern und bis 2035 30 Millionen Menschen aus der extremen Armut befreien, wenn er von bedeutenden politischen Reformen und Maßnahmen zur Handelserleichterung begleitet wird, so die Weltbank. Wenn die Freihandelszone voll funktionsfähig ist, wird sie einen Markt von 1,2 Milliarden Menschen schaffen und ein kombiniertes BIP von 2,5 Billionen Dollar erwirtschaften.
